The Noble Prize
The scientists at the famous Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, decide the Nobel Prizes in medicine. The Nobel Peace Prize is decided in Norway. Linus Pauling was succesful in both countries! Pauling won the Nobel Peace Prize due to his book "No More War!", which is about nuclear pollution. This book led to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in the 60's. The Swedes awarded a prize to one of their own, Arvid Carlsson, but deservedly so.
This photo is Arvid Carlsson, a brilliant Swedish researcher who has backed the dopamine hypothesis for schizophrenia. Carlsson is an expert on neurotransmission.
Neighboring countries have also made brilliant contributuions, including Norway. Norway has contributed Walaas, Linjaerde, and others. Walaas reported a toxic factor in the blood of schizophrenics which reduced glucose uptake by cells in an assay. This was later confirmed by other groups including Frohman & Gottlieb of Detroit.
This is Alfred Nobel, who founded the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. The clipart is from their website, which is very educational.
This photograph of Nobel, who was very wealthy due to his invention, was taken from the Nobel e-Museum website.
Shown here is the medal given to Nobel Prize winners. Although Nobel was an inventor, he recognized the value of literature, the pursuit of peace, and other endeavors. Prizes are given in these areas as well as in economics, physics, medicine, etc. This clipart is from the Nobel e-Museum.

Carlsson is by no means the only brilliant Swedish researcher. Borg and others have repeatedly reported muscle pathology, including glycogen granules, in the muscles of schizophrenics. This suggests an error (a partial failure) in glucose metabolism. Japanese workers have reported carbohydrate deposits in the brains of schizophrenics, confirming the work of Borg et al.
In this brilliant book Terenius of Sweden is both an editor and a contributor. The book presents contributions from brilliant scientists all over the world, including several from Sweden. Carlsson is represented.
This photo of Nobel laureate Arvid Carlsson is from a Swedish website.
Shown here is Carlsson giving his Nobel lecture at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. This December, 1999 speech was about a half century's work on neurotranmsmitters.
Shown here is a Swedish stamp honoring the 1970 Nobel Prize winners in medicine and physiology. These were Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler of Sweden, and Julius Axelrod of the US. Von Euler discovered norepinephrine. Axelrod discovered COMT, a key enzyme for neurotransmitters.
