The Violent Mind
Because of the fact that violence is such a terrible problem in society, and because this author (Olson) feels that the brain mediates violence, I have decided to include a quote about it. Carlos Marcello was from a crime family that controlled the Mob in the New Orleans area.
This photo shows Carlos Marcello on the left wearing sunglasses. "Three can keep a secret if two are dead." Carlos Marcello
"Varying the concentrations of substances normaly present in the human body may control mental disease." Linus Pauling. This photo of a young Pauling was taken long before the quote, which was from a brilliant 1968 paper. The photo is presented courtesy of the National Library of Medicine.
"I have reached the conclusion that another general method of treatment, which may be called orthomolecular therapy, may be found to be of great value, and may turn out to be the best method of treatment for many patients." Linus Pauling. The photo, presented courtesy of the National Library of Medicine, shows Pauling when he was at an agricultural college. The quote is again from the famous paper published April 19, 1968 in Science. Pauling's theories were later rejected by an APA (American Psychiatric Assocization) task force. However, Hoffer & Osmond rejected the APA conclusions and supported Pauling.
This clipart is from amazon.com. "Our treatment of individuals with this disease has, all too often, also been discordant and cruel. It is, in fact, the single biggest blemish on the face of contemporary American medicine and social services; when the social history of our era is written, the plight of persons with schizophrenia will be recorded as having been a national scandal." Dr. E. Fuller Torrey is an advocate for schizophrenics and for the homeless. He describes the mental health system as a "disaster". He feels that many sick individuals are homeless.
Shown here is a 2-dimensional view of ketamine, which has a benzene ring (like dopamine and mescaline). It has a methyl group which may be related to its properties. Again the clipart is from Molecule of the Month in Bristol, England. The Chemistry Department of Bristol University maintains the site. This is a further explanation of the famous quote from Dr. Gerard.

"Water is the best food because it contains no harmful ingredients." Craig Olson. Although this is a joke I made up, there is some truth to it. Water is allowed on the Boston diet.
William James (1842-1910) was a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He became a psychologist. Although Freud rejected God, James had a different point of view. "A chain is no stronger than its weakest link, and life is after all a chain." I decided to include this James quote because there is a chain of chemical reactions critical to the generation of ATP. This chain is of great importance to the brain, and any disruption in the manufacture of ATP is disastrous to the brain. For example, niacin is required in these reactions, and a deficiency of niacin leads to pellagra. Insanity is a symptom of pellagra.
"No more war!" Linus Pauling (1958). This photo of Pauling graduating from Oregon Agricultural College was taken years before the quote. The photo is presented courtesy of the NLM. The reason why Pauling decided to become a political activist was that he claimed (correctly) that nuclear testing was polluting the atmosphere. This later won him the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Shopping can be a compulsion, much like gambling and drinking." Craig Olson. The drawing is a joke, yet there is some truth in it for people who can't manage their money.
"For every twisted thought there is a twisted molecule." Dr. Ralph Gerard. Although I have not yet found a picture of Dr. Gerard, I have presented the chemical structure of ketamine, a notorious recreational drug. The only good use the drug has is in research. This drug produces a temporary psychosis. Thus it is a "twisted molecule", not found in the normal human brain. The chemical structure has been studied because it resembles dopamine. This clipart is from Molecule of the Month, which is a website at the University of Bristol in England.
