BIBLIOGRAPHY
There are some old books that I have been unable to get images of, including American Handbook of Psychiatry, Lafayette Clinic Studies in Schizophrenia, Interpretation of Schizophrenia, etc. These books have influenced my ideas to a substantial extent.
Some books have already been mentioned in the web page "Book Reviews". On the current page I will mention mostly books that are valuable. Some of the material that is science fiction, so to speak, has been mentioned on the web pages "Quackery" and "False Prophets".
This book cover is from Alibris. Alibris is like Amazon.com, which also sells these books. I have included this book because most of the other books I have used are on schizophrenia. What is diagnosed as schizophrenia in the United States can be diagnosed as depression in England.
This is a recent book. The cover is from Alibris. Drugs may not be the best answere, however. They have too many serious side effects.
In this particular book I decided to show a figure rather than the cover. It is a century old version of Gray's Anatomy. Shown are two views of the striatum. The striatum has been suspected in mental disease. It is a subcortical (beneath the cortex) area.
This cover is from the appi.org website, a nonprofit psychiatry site. This and other books from this website are more technical than many from Alibris or Amazon.
Here is another book from the American Psychiatric Press, Inc. These books are for doctors and students. They are also recent books. I have not yet seen any classic books (such as Kraepelin) at this brilliant site.

This is an old book that is based mostly on common sense. I have included it because it is difficult to find images of old books. Some of the old books by Kraeplein, Alzheimer, and Nissl are of substantial value because the neuropathology is untainted by drugs. Unfortunately the work of Alzheimer and Nissl has not been translated into English.
This is a classic book, perhaps of only historical value. Some books are mostly valuable for describing the symptoms, and this is an example.
This book by Dr. Cheraskin shows the type of approach favored by this author (Olson). This type of approach has the potential of saving the government maybe 100 billion dollars a year in healthcare and drug costs, but the government isn't interested. It is cheaper, safer, and more effective than drugs. It is the same approach which was called "orthomolecular" medicine by Pauling.
One of the authors of this new book is Ming Tsuang, a famous Harvard psychiatrist.
This historical book is another APPI book. During this period a lot of brilliant work was done, but also some no-so-brilliant work was done. Many unsound treatments were invented and later abandoned. Sakel invented insulin shock treatment which, unfortunately, was dangerous and resulted in some deaths.
