Jung and the Restless
Jung was not all bad, but he had some false ideas. His good idea was that an unknown toxin, toxin X, caused schizophrenia. He came up with this because many things could not be explained by his psychological theories. One such fact was the hereditary taint. Kraepelin studied "dementia praecox" and found it to be hereditary. This fact is difficult to explain by Jung's psychological types.
Shown here is the late Dr. Carl Jung. Jung was from Switzerland, but he favored the Nazis. He wrote criticism of Freud because Freud was Jewish. Somehow all this was forgiven after we won World War II. Jung's image was rehabilitated and his theories, although largely false, were taught in the schools. The only thing he was right about was the toxin X. However, there may be more than one toxin. The proportions of two toxins could explain the variety of symptoms in mental disease. One toxin could be temporary (unstable), and another toxin could last longer, causing long term debilitation. The stable toxin could accumulate in brain tissues, much like lipofuscin or melanin. In fact the stable toxin might be an abnormal form of lipofuscin or neuromelanin.
Not all quackery involves doctors. There are many phoney medicines that have been produced. This image is shown courtesy of the NLM. Unfortunately the motive for this is money. People can make a great deal of money off of medicines.
This photo of Walter Freeman is taken from the epub.org website. Freeman started out as a brilliant neuropathologist but later turned to advocating lobotomy.
Shown here is a photo of Antonio Egas Moniz, a Portugese psychiatrist who advocated "leukotomy", later to be called "lobotomy". The Photo is taken from the epub.org website, which probably scanned it from a book. There is a book on lobotomy called "Great and Deperate Cures", but the title is a misnomer. The operations were not great and they were not cures. They were mistakes.
This clipart was also from the epub.org website. It shows what was then called "leukotomy", a procedure that produced brain damage.

This drawing, from The Crime Library, shows Auschwitz, which was run by Dr. Josef Mengele.
This is Josef Mengele in Paraguay in 1960. Mengele's plan to build a master race failed, and he was forced to flee to South America. People tried to hunt him down, but failed until after his death. He believed in eugenics. Unfortunately this involved "euthanasia", which in reality meant killing those who were not perfect. This has given euthanasia a bad name to this day.
This photo shows L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Dianetics and the Church of Scientology. Unfortunately his methods do not work. They simply do not correct the errors in brain metabolism that cause mental disease.
This clipart of Dr. Alexander Shulgin is from the East Bay Express website. Shulgin is not exactly a quack, but he is more like a mad scientist. Shulgin is like the fictional Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who meant well but created a monster. Shulgin invented MDMA, also known as "Ecstacy". This name is a misnomer. Perhaps the drug should be called "Psychosis". The drug has a chemical structure similar to DMPEA, which is suspected of causing schizophrenia. DMPEA is made in the brain from dopamine.
This photo of Dr. Peter Breggin is from the Peter Breggin website. Breggin has severely criticized the drug companies as well as electroshock treatment. Breggin is listed here because he claims that there is no physical basis for mental disease. Breggin has ignored more than a century of data to the contrary.
