This is a sample from Arthur's Clipart. A fossil of a fish is seen. But what does this have to do with medicine? The answere is that we are animals. We have evolved from animals, and we are animals ourselves. The human brain is a tool for survival, much like a claw. We do not always see things objectively. We see things in such a way that it promotes our own survival. This is why we have wars, revolutions, etc. This website gets the Olson Award for the best biology website.

The Olson Award for the best biology book is Darwin's Origin of Species. This is probably the most influencial science book of all time.

The award for Greatest Technological Achievement goes to Alexander Graham Bell of Boston for inventing the telephone.

Since forensic medicine is an important part of medicine (as well as history), I have decided to make a Most Famous Murder Victim Award to honor a great person who was murdered. This was a difficult choice since a great many were assassinated. I decided on Abe Lincoln.

The Best Chemistry Website award goes to Molecule of the Month in Bristol, England. The Chemistry Dept. of Bristol University produces this outstanding site. Shown here is the chemical structure of tryptophan as displayed on that site. Tryptophan floods the brain cells in schizophrenia, although that fact is not mentioned on the site. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid.

This is a photo of Walter Bruetsch, a brilliant neuropathologist from the 1930's who reported various positive findings in the brains of schizophrenics. The award is not for Bruetsch, but rather for the website, which is that of the National Library of Medicine. This website gets the Olson Award for the best medical website. There is a brilliant website in Sweden for the Nobel Prizes, but that website deals with a lot of matters including economics, mathematics, physics, etc.

The Olson Award winner for the best educational website is Dr. Chudler's Neuroscience for Kids. Shown here is a clipart from that site, which is advanced for some kids. There is some simple stuff and also some advanced material. Psilocybin is from a "magic" mushroom.

I decided to give a second award to Dr. Chudler's site. Neuroscience for Kids gets the award for the Best Neuroscience Website. This clipart of the molecular structure of a hallucinogen is from Neuroscience for Kids.

The award for the Best Neuroscience Journal goes to The American Journal of Psychiatry. This was a difficult choice because some journals, including Schizophrenia Bulletin, have no drug company advertizing. However, the American Journal of Psychiatry is available online. At one time Schizophrenia Bulletin was online, but the government appears to have taken it off of the Internet, possibly to pinch pennies. Also the drug advertizing contains useful information about the side effects.

I decided to give the Medical Achievement award to Louis Pasteur. Pasteur took a lot of flack at the time because he wasn't an MD. A century later the same thing happened to Linus Pauling, who was a Ph. D.
