The Boston Diet
The Boston diet was invented by this author (Olson), but inspiration for it came from a wide variety of brilliant scientists including Adelle Davis, Linus Pauling, Andrew Weil, Richard Wurtman, and others. Some of the ideas about protein came from reading articles by Dr. Charles Frohman and Dr. Jacques Gottlieb of Detroit. Frohman and Gottlieb established the fact that amino acids flood the cells in schizophrenia. The same thing can be deduced from the work of Dr. Savulev of Russia and the work of other neuropathologists. The work of Sacks also supports this view.

At first Linus Pauling was severely criticized for suggesting nutritional influences on cancer. However, Pauling seemed to outlive his critics. His critics have now eaten crow. Even the NIH, which blasted him at first, now endorses a nutritional componet in cancer prevention. This image is presented courtesy the NLM. The anti-cancer diet is very similar to the Boston diet except that the Boston diet does not allow shrimp (because of the high protein content).

These foods are all on the Boston diet. They have no cholesterol, and they have a lot of fiber. Fruits, vegetables, and grains are on the Boston diet. The poster is courtesy the NLM.

Again this image is presented courtesy of the NLM. The Boston diet allows these staples, which are mostly grains and vegetables. However it does not allow animal products. This is in part due to the cholesterol and in part due to the protein. The Boston diet is a diet for mental illness, which is caused by a flooding of the brain cells with amino acids.

The prestigious McGill University in Montreal, Canada has recognized the fact that nutrition has an effect on cancer. This poster is presented courtesy of the NLM. This appears to support the controversial views of the late Linus Pauling and the late Adelle Davis.

Vegetables are good on almost any diet, except possibly the PKU diet. This poster is presented courtesy of the NLM. The PKU diet is a very strict low protein diet.

This clipart is from the Karl Loren website, which was also my source for the photo of Davis on the Women in Healthcare page. This shows a book by Davis which I read and thought was very positive. Davis thought that there are nutritional influences on cancer, much like Linus Pauling. Pauling never referenced any of Davis's work, however. They appeared to have worked independently, much like Darwin and Wallace, who independently discovered evolution. Darwin became more famous than Wallace due to his book, Origin of the Species.

This image is presented courtesy the NLM. These legumes are on the Boston diet as well as on the Pritikin diet, which is similar. The Pritikin diet is a low fat diet.

This image is presented courtesy the NLM. Atkins restricts carbohydrates in his diet, but his diet is for losing weight. The Boston diet will lose weight, but only if you are overweight. Fruits are encouraged on the Boston diet because of their high contents of water, fiber, and polyphenols. Carbohydrates are allowed in moderation in the Boston diet. On the other hand, the Boston diet is stricter with fat and with protein than the Atkins diet. The Scarsdale diet, which is for losing weight, is high in protein. One reason why the Boston diet causes weight loss is the high fiber content. Also the Boston diet is very low in fat, and fat has a lot of calories.

These foods are all forbidden in the Boston diet, which is similar to the Hare Krishna diet. However, the Krishnas are allowed to eat dairy products. The Boston diet is a vegan diet, and therefore is good for lactose intolerance. The only potential problem with the Boston diet is that vegetarian diets can risk vitamin B12 deficiency since vitamin B12 is low in vegetarian foods. However, this problem is easily solved by taking vitamin supplements.

Here is another poster courtesy the NLM. Fats are bad on almost all diets except for the Atkins diet. Atkins feels that fats produce saiety, which may be partly true. However, fats often contain cholesterol. Dr. Andrew Weil favors omega-3 fatty acids as a supplement. He recommends them for depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential. Thus a completely fat-free diet, which is almost impossible, would be unwise. Fats have a lot of calories, and should be avoided for weight loss. In schizophrenia there are fat deposits in the brain because the brain cells are overeating due to a transport error.
