The Animal Cell
There are many different kinds of specialized cells. However, they all have certain basic parts. Plant cells are different than animal cells. Only animal cells will be discussed here.
The DNA is contained in the nucleus. The RNA, which contains blueprints for proteins, is supplied by the nucleus to the ribosomes.
This is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, which is found in the cytoplasm.
This is the basic chemical structure of an amino acid. Amino acids are put together to form proteins in the rough endoplasmic reticulum. In brain cells the rough endoplasmic reticulum forms Nissl bodies, which were named after Franz Nissl.
This clipart drawing is a schematic of the mitochondrion, which is swollen and fragmented in schizophrenia.
This clipart shows the Golgi apparatus, named after a brilliant Italian scientist.

This drawing is a closeup of the cell membrane. Fat-soluble substances often have a better chance of getting into the membrane.
This clipart image shows the animal cell including various organelles.
Ribosomes are found in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER). They contain RNA, which is used to make proteins from amino acids.
Lysosomes are kind of like garbage disposals. They contain enzymes to get rid of cellular garbage.
