The Scarsdale Diet
This diet was named by Dr. Tarnover after the town he lived in, which was in the state of New York. His diet is a high protein diet for losing weight. This diet is almost the opposite of the Boston diet, which is low in protein, low in fat, moderate in carbohydrates, and high in fiber. Unfortunately Dr. Tarnover was shot to death by his jilted girlfriend, Jean Harris. She had nothing to do with the Harris diet, which was invented by Dr. Harris.
Pritikin
Ornish and Weil are still alive, but, unfortunately, Pritikin and Atkins are not. Pritikin was not a doctor, but he was right. The Pritikin diet, a low fat diet, is good for diabetes, heart disease, weight loss, and general health. The Pritikin diet is similar to both the Kowalski diet and the Ornish diet.
The Harris Diet
Dr. Harris studied hyperinsulinsim, also called hypoglycemia. In this disease the pancreas produces too much insulin, which is disastrous. Too much sugar in the diet causes a reaction.
This diet was later adopted and modified by Adelle Davis and also by the orthomolecular doctors Wendel & Beebe. Unfortunately the great nutritionist Davis is no longer alive.
Carlton Fredericks also endorsed the Harris diet. This author, Olson, has modified it as part of the Olson diet.
In the Olson diet, insulin is bad because it causes amino acids to flood the cells, which are already flooded with them in mental disease.
In the Harris diet snacks are eaten to avoid the blood sugar from getting too low. Also the snacking lowers the amount of sugar ingested at any one time. Candy and cake are forbidden.
The PKU Diet
The disease PKU was mentioned by Pauling in his brilliant 1968 paper endorsing "orthomolecular" psychiatry. It seems that severe mental symptoms are seen in this disease, which causes mental retardation. The diet is very low in amino acids, particulary phenylalanine.
Like many metabolic errors, the disease is hereditary. This successful diet partly inspired the Boston diet.
