The Biochemistry of Schizophrenia
In 1963 M. Streifler and W. Kornbleuth published a report about schizophrenia in a Russian book. They reported that serum from schizophrenic patients caused problems in a retinal neuron, which was used for an assay. The energy metabolism was slowed. A similar report appeared in 1959 by Jaques et al. The Detroit group reported reduced activity of the oxidase system of enzymes in erythrocytes of schizophrenics. The enzymes of the Krebs cycle are located in the cristae of the mitochondria, whereas the substrates are concentrated in the matrix.
The poster is presented courtesy the NLM. Dr. Andrew Weil says, correctly, that the brain is made up of the food we eat. Therefore he feels that nutrition can be used to treat depresssion. Weil accepts both alternative medicine and orthodox medicine. This author (Olson) accepts some alternative medicine but not all alternative medicine. Nutrition is part of both orthodox medicine and alternative medicine and is valid. A few exaggerated claims may be false, but even NIH is now promoting nutrition. There are also exaggerated claims for prescription drugs which can be far more dangerous than most herbs. Nevertheless this author does not reject prescription drugs, which would be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. This author only wishes to throw out the bathwater. Because of these problems prescription drugs must be closely regulated.
Studies are also done on chicks and guinea pigs. Shown here is a nutrition study, presented courtesy of the NLM.
This clipart, which is on a high school level, is from the Chemistry Tutorial of the Biology Project website. Life is based on carbon, which reacts with oxygen. Oxygen is required for human life. Plants have different reactions.
Shown here are vacuoles, which are very small in the normal situation in animal cells. This clipart is from Cells Alive. In schizophrenia there are many vauoles filled with fat in the brain cells. This is due to metabolic errors in the brain.
Shown here is a cell organelle called the "nucleus", as depicted by the Cells Alive clipart website. Different chemicals are contained in different organelles, and the nucleus contains genetic material, including DNA. DNA is like a blueprint. RNA is a blueprint for proteins. RNA is delivered to the endoplasmic reticulum, where proteins are made from amino acids.

This photo of a germ-free rat is presented courtesy the NLM. Rats are used in both nutrition studies and drug studies. Axelrod used rats in his neurotransmitter studies. Savulev (1967) used white rats as an assay in his study of the efects of blood serum from schizophrenics. Winter & Flataker used rats in the United States is a similar study. The serum was injected into the rats.
This clipart came from an anonymous e-mail sent to me. It shows burgers, which are forbidden on the Boston diet. When we eat food, we are eating chemicals. In this case the meat is mostly protein and fat.
This clipart came from the Cells Alive clipart website. It shows red cells, which contain oxygen. The purpose of these cells is to transport the oxygen to where it is needed, which is almost everywhere in the body.
These are mitochodria as visualized by Cells Alive, an extremely good educational clipart website. In the mitochondria a lot of chemical reactions take place, particulary involving energy metabolism and the breakdown of glucose. Some reactions take place in the cytosol.
Again the clipart is from Cells Alive!, an outstanding clipart website. This site is very useful for students. Shown here is the endoplasmic reticulum, also called the er. This organelle is abnormal is schizophrenia due to the flooding of the cell with amino acids. Proteins are made from amino acids with the help of RNA, which is in the ribosomes.
